Landslides in Nuwara Eliya due to continuous raining and over 450 houses damaged – MP Sri Ranga

'MP Sri Ranga has told this in the Shakthi TV’s Good Morning Sri Lanka show on 17th January 2011'
Based on his visit to the affected areas on 16th January 2011 and his ground assessment, he said that two serious problems have been created due to the inclement weather prevailing in the country, firstly the severe flooding especially in the Eastern districts and secondly, the landslides in the hill country.
Landslides have damaged the houses and roads which require re-construction in the Nuwara Eliya district.
He indicated that about one month ago as discussed in the Disaster Management meeting participated by him and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, the Government has released funds for the purchase of equipment to monitor the landslides in the Nuwara Eliya district.
He further noted that several landslides are still occurring and there is a huge threat of landslides occurring in the Nuwara Eliaya district in the future as well and thus, the estimated initial damages are likely to increase.
According to him, the people of the area could see the sun only on 16th January 2011 after some days.
